Is Pandora Evil?
I used to think Pandora was cool, now I'm not so sure.
I've noticed that Pandora plays more music that I've all ready tagged "thumbs up" (so it knows that I like it) then it does music I haven't heard before, or that I haven't tagged.
Anyone who took Psychology 101 knows the context that you see, hear, taste, or otherwise experience something in profoundly impacts your judgement of it. If you're all ready feeling good, you'll like stuff more. If you're feeling bad, you'll like it less.
Is Pandora just whoring this simple principle along with somepretty bad modest A.I. to try and "trick" you in to liking music you haven't heard by packing it with music you all ready like, thus increasing the chances you'll buy it? I think so. It's just very evil clever contextual advertising.
Not to mention, I don't really think Pandora is a hero for indy bands looking tosell out be discovered. For instance, if I try to create a radio station based on Rose Hill Drive, one of the most popular bands from Boulder, Pandora doesn't know what the fuck I'm talking about.
Everybody, lets use A.I. and data mining to help make the world a better place, okay? You can help, by digging this entry</A.
